From “PROMISE: A Memoir”
© 2011 by Mark Manley

A smokin’ Joe Farrell song was interrupted for the
radio announcement. John Lennon was gunned down on December
8th. Who would could shoot John? Why?

I thought I might have heard Charlie Manson’s voice
crooning softly, “See, I told you, ‘No sense really does
make sense…’”

Everyone has heard. It disturbs me greatly. John Lennon
is dead. Loss. The murder of Romance. The assassination of
tea and bread and marmalade, of pure, clear maple syrup on
pancakes, of bicycle riding in the early morning hours of
summer. Youth shot down. Riddled T-shirts. Torn, stained
headbands. Loving who you want to, and laughing at the world.
Feelings warm on a cool and cloudy night over sausage pizza and
DAD’S root beer in Chicago and all of it gone, obscene, memories
bloody. No one is safe. Nothing to do about it. It is finding
out you lost your virginity to a whore. Tarnished ideals. A
fucking shame. I mourn.

Lennon’s death points out our own mortality— our own
susceptibility to a violent end. There are a lot of people
crying out about the availability of handguns, and the need for
gun control, but that is not it. John Lennon was murdered,
purposely killed by another human being. In the end it doesn’t
make any difference that he was shot as opposed to having been
stabbed with a knife, or strangled to death with a scarf, or
poisoned… The problem is not the prevalence of weapons in our
society (which will always be with us, in the form of our hands
and feet, if in no other form…), but rather the prevalence of
malevolent will. How do you control that? You can’t legislate
it away, or vote it down. You can’t even shoot or napalm it out
of existence. It has been with us since the beginning of our
time. It is a part of ourselves that we have come to accept.
Our political leaders are surrounded by Secret Service
agents and wear bullet-proof vests and hats, and deliver
speeches from behind bullet-proof screens, and are generally
inaccessible to the public. We accept this as normal. But now
that someone representative of the dream of a better world has
been taken away, we react. This was no corrupt politician, no
mercenary hypocrite… This was John Lennon. He was ours. He
was US. And it is not supposed to happen this way. The
protagonist is not supposed to get blown away! WE are not
supposed to get blown away, and certainly not in the middle of
our own story!

And so we seethe…

And still, John is dead.

And so we mourn.

It is a time for sadness, for tears. We have a right to
mourn. But when tomorrow comes will anything really change? Or
will we continue to walk in fear of ourselves?

It is ironic that I was once disappointed that I had
missed out on the 1960′s, which had always seemed like such an
exciting time to be a functioning adult… Now it seems I will
have my chance after all, living in these turbulent times…
Perhaps one day I, too, may find myself an unwilling part of
gasping headlines like WOMAN RUNS DOWN 25 ON SIDEWALK IN LAS
VEGAS, or LENNON SHOT DEAD. Religion, anybody?

What follows is an excerpt from “PROMISE, A MEMOIR” by Mark Manley:
_________________
Still searching for a sound and an instrument with which I could be identified, I began looking for a double-necked bass— one neck fretted, one neck fretless. Up to this point, my goal had been to try to make a fretless bass sound like a fretted bass while slapping, and to try to make a fretted bass sound like a fretless one by playing it so that each individual note bloomed or swelled as much as possible… On a doubleneck I could legitimately achieve both things, both emotions, even within the same song. A doubleneck would also create a striking visual image for photos, videos and live appearances. The problem was finding one.
_______________
I tried all of the companies I could think of— Steinberger wouldn’t build me one of their L-series instruments as a double-neck, only their lower line instrument, and they told me themselves, “I don’t think you really want one of those…” Alembic would build me one, but they wanted $5600— I could have bought a car for that amount… I had wanted to buy American, but after a couple of months of calling around I couldn’t find a suitable American manufacturer, so I turned to the maker of Wal basses.
_______________
I had been trying to avoid Britain-based Electric Wood, as the company was actually called, because even though I knew they made an excellent bass, Jonas Hellborg was already associated with Wal. And to make the Wal option even less attractive to me, he played a Wal doubleneck. But for my budget, and for the simple reason that they agreed to build it, I ordered a Wal. I made sure to specify a different finish than the one Jonas had on his bass.
__________________
It would be my first instrument made the way I wanted it. All of the others had either been used, or demo instruments, or stock… I had thought that the Jaydee would have been my “main” bass, and that I would have been done with the search for “my instrument”, but the bass had been played by Jaco Pastorius, and tragically, Jaco had died of injuries sustained in a beating by Luc Havan, the manager of a Florida nightclub…
___________________
Ironically, when I first purchased the Jaydee, and Jaco was still alive, his reputation had been extremely bad, and it might almost have been a negative that he had played the bass. There was, for example, a scratch on the bottom of the bass that he was said to have put there… Now that he was gone, however, he was being hailed as the troubled genius that he actually was… and I no longer wanted to risk something happening to the bass by continuing to take it out to gigs. It was now a part of bass history.
___________________
Jaco’s death touched me in a lot of ways. He had had a lot of problems towards the end of his life, and there are books and archival magazine articles where you can read up on how he came to meet his end… [Bill Dickens knew Jaco and has some stories to tell about his life and death, but I think I'll leave it to him to tell those stories firsthand, rather than relate them as hearsay in this volume...]
____________________
See Jaco: The Extraordinary And Tragic Life Of Jaco Pastorius: “The World’s Greatest Bass Player”, by Bill Milkowski.
____________________
Jaco’s death put things into a larger context for me. Jaco had been, from a media point of view, perhaps the most well-known electric bass player in the world when he died. And yet the passing of a bass player doesn’t even really cause a ripple in the surface of the world at large. The passing of a jazz musician, even a “genius”, doesn’t really give most people pause. The passing of any musician or artist seems to go unnoticed and unreported except in arcane journals and by word of mouth— which was how I first heard about what had happened to Jaco… and which, ironically, was the name of his big band.
__________________
I aspired to be a great bass player, a great musician, not daring to even hope to be as successful at it as Jaco— and the world didn’t even care about Jaco.
_________________
It was a sobering realization— an inverse epiphany of sorts, and his death made me sit down and consider: Just what was I doing this for…? It wasn’t just for money, otherwise I should be out there trying to get a gig with Michael Jackson, who was said to be paying his drummer $35,000 a week… If it wasn’t for the money, and it wasn’t for women (and it wasn’t, otherwise I would have taken advantage of the dark-haired woman’s offer at that club in Portage)— then it must be for the Music. But I had to admit to myself that I wasn’t really getting the charge out of the music I had gone into this whole thing for… Something was missing.
_____________________
We were playing the coolest jazz-fusion rooms in Chicago, and my musicians were some of the best on the planet… but something wasn’t right. Jaco was dead, and I knew that something wasn’t right.
______________________
______________________

When the Wal doubleneck arrived in July, several things were not right. Not the least of which was that “Wal” himself, Ian Waller, had passed away while the bass was in transit. I had just received what was likely the last Wal bass ever built by the man himself… And, I had come to find out that Ian had only made three Wal doublenecks: Jonas Hellborg’s; one ordered by Jeff Berlin (but eventually sold to a player in Munich); and mine… Once again I had a piece of bass history that I really didn’t feel comfortable taking from club to club, and studio to studio… I still needed a working bass.
___________________
The other things that weren’t right: The finish— instead of the “chemical grey” that I had ordered, the bass looked just like Jonas’… (the fault of the British dealer I had ordered the bass through, not Electric Wood). And then U.S. Customs ripped me off by not only charging me a higher duty than they should have by attributing my bass to the wrong category, but by charging me twice…
___________________
Now I know better. At the time it was, “How much do I owe you?” on my part, and they named a figure and I paid it. Then as I was leaving the warehouse at O’Hare, another customs official stopped me and told me that I still owed additional monies…
___________________
The lesson being: There are thieves everywhere, even in official uniforms.
